Target Audience Research
My film is targeted at a very wide audience but from using the YouGov profiler website I've come to realize that films that are in some way similar to mine (crime, thriller genre) seem to be very popular with male audiences over the age of 24 to the ages of 59. They also tended to be in the ABC1 class bracket meaning that the upper middle class, middle class and lower middle class preferred films like Pulp Fiction, Silence of the Lambs, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo than those in the C2DE bracket who are typically the skilled working class, working class and those at lowest level of subsistence.
This surprised me greatly as I was expecting my target audience to look like this:
fig. 1
A female young adult that has a fascination with crime and thriller films i.e Pulp fiction, Girl With the Dragon tattoo. Some disposable income, student in university or in full time work. Enjoys films and TV series's such as CSI or Law and Order, Sherlock (crime fiction/thriller). C1/C2DE bracket small to medium disposable income but enjoys going out to the cinema, with friends. Finds it easier to relate to with a female protagonists but likes both.
but these types of people are more into films like mine:
fig. 2 25-39 year old ABC1 male
fig. 3 40-59 year old ABC1 male
But now that I have conducted some research its easy to find out that the male in the ABC1 social class bracket with and a disposable income averaging at £374 a month is the hegemonic media audience. It makes more sense that those with the larger disposable incomes spend more on films this is why they are the hegemonic audience and most times the target audience.
To conclude I have now learned that my film appeals to males but my target audience still aims to be people around the age of 16-25.
